The
Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, on the south coast of the
western bulge of Africa, is bordered to the north by Mali
and Burkina Faso, to the east by Ghana, to the south the
Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by
Liberia and Guinea.
One of the most striking features of Côte d’Ivoire,
distinguishing it from many other African countries, is the extreme ethnic and
linguistic variety. There are more than 60 ethnic groups and these groups
which are divided into 7 principal cluster groups. The Akan, Krou or Kru,
Lagoon, Nuclear-Mande, Peripheral-Mande, Senoufo and the Lobi. Other ethnic
aliens include groups from Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana and Guinea. In addition,
there are small numbers of Lebanese and French.
